Most dynasty teams don’t fail because they lack effort. They fail because they lack structure and a solid framework. Have no fear — Forged for Football is here to help direct interested fantasy football players on how to build the foundation they need to succeed.
To be forged means to create something strong through effort. When something is forged, it is created with intent, through discipline, and built to last long term. A good dynasty team — and any strong football organization — is not just loosely assembled; it is forged with a strong desire for success. This is the whole idea behind Forged for Football.
Here at Forged for Football we have the following 5 core principles:
1. Structure Over Emotion
Decisions in fantasy football (especially dynasty leagues) are framework driven, not hype driven. For example, if you make your decisions based on feelings and not facts, then you may hold onto players too long and miss out on opportunities to really extend the length of your ability to win championships. Letting go of a player before they hit the veteran wall, even though you like them, could give you a chance at draft picks or younger players that can extend the life of a challenging team instead of holding on to a veteran that will have declining value soon.
The same holds true for teams in the NFL. The structure of an organization leads to the success of the franchise. It all starts at the top with the owner and trickles down. If you have an owner who lets the general manager do his job, that is a great start. If the general manager then does his job and makes good draft selections, adds key pieces in free agency for good prices and manages the salary cap well then, he sets the coaches up for success. If the coaches in turn coach the players well and develop young talent, then you are likely to have a recipe for a very consistent football team. To keep this structure the emotions can’t take over. Owners need to keep their composure and let their general managers do their jobs. General managers need to make sure that they make sound deals and don’t let their emotions get them in trouble and coaches need to have patience with the development of their players. It is all tied together.
2. Value Insulation
It is very important to build your team around assets that retain trade leverage and hold value. When it comes to your dynasty fantasy football teams, it is paramount to build a roster with young players who have high upside and high-value draft picks. It is fine to have good veterans on the team, but you need a mix to keep winning sustainable in the long range. Many of the dynasty leagues are Superflex leagues, meaning you start 2 quarterbacks each week. This makes the value of quarterbacks skyrocket. It is very important to have two quality quarterbacks to start in your lineup and at least one, if not two, backups that are starting options in bye weeks or to add depth for possible injuries.
The same is true when it comes to building an actual NFL roster. You need players that are pillars for your organization. A top need is usually a franchise quarterback. If your team has a franchise quarterback, then you are usually going to be in the playoff hunt. Regardless, it is important to have superstar players with leadership ability and then to build around them with good depth. It is also very important to stack draft picks and be successful in making draft selections. If your team has good young talent on their roster then they are getting great production from players on their rookie deals, which allows more salary cap money to go to some big free agents to fill the few holes that you may have left over.
3. Timeline Awareness
In the world of fantasy football, you must be aware of the situation that your team is in. Are you a contending team? Are you a rebuilding team? Are you somewhere in the middle and unsure where to go? All these situations are possible and you need to be aware of your situation so you can act accordingly to either continue your success or turn your team around. If done correctly, it is possible to turn a team at the bottom of your league into a contender rather quickly, but it requires awareness and the ability to act accordingly.
4. Evidence Over Narrative
I am of the belief that when it comes to fantasy football your opinions should be supported by facts. Things like usage trends, contract context, age curves and scoring data need to be analyzed and monitored to truly make the best decisions that you can make for your team.
This same outlook can be used for NFL teams as well. As their general managers are making decisions it is very important that they use facts and analytical information to help in putting together the best team that they can.
5. Never Say Never
Too many times in dynasty league formats, I hear someone say, “That player is untouchable I will never trade them.” To this I say, “Never say never.” In my opinion you should make it known that you are always willing to listen to trade opportunities. You may have players that you value highly and even value over what sources say they are worth. That is OK — it is going to happen. However, you never know when someone will be willing to blow you away with an offer. Always be willing to listen and always try to think logically about the offers that are coming in.
